In this evocative collection, a hybrid of word and visual poetry (asemics,) poet Karla Van Vliet immerses readers in a world where nature and emotion are intertwined in quiet revelation. The reader is invited to experience the subtle shifts in perception and feeling that come with each encounter, whether it be with another person, a place, or a moment in time. Each poem serves as a portal into the inner landscapes where the flow of a river, the flight of birds, and the colors of the sky become metaphors for love, loss, longing, and transformation.

“Inherent in both poetry and visual art is the gesture toward what is essentially unsayable. Karla Van Vliet’s new work, Bone Scribed, works brilliantly with both poems and asemic poems—visual poetics—to speak to and from the watery depths of where words fail us when we need them the most. From poems that speak directly to the notion of words to the notations of the many colors of blue to utterly embodied asemic poetics, these are love poems to and for the beloved and to the self becoming beloved. The beautiful fluid dance between the gestures of poetry and the visual in her asemic poems is groundbreaking and breathtaking.”
Sue Scavo, author of Buried [A Place]
